Wilbur 38 Duffy
By Elizabeth Ginns Britten
Spring 2006
An “understated interior” is almost an oxymoron in the boating world, where it’s not uncommon to find a 40-footer with at least two staterooms, one head, a full galley, and a large saloon with plush seating all around. The custom 38 Duffy from Wilbur Yachts (207-244-5000, www.wilburyachts.com) goes against this grain entirely. In fact, her motto seems to be “less is more.”
Although her LOA is nearly 40 feet, the 38 I tested had just one stateroom: a forepeak master. Stowage abounds—under the bed, in a six-drawer closet and hanging locker to port, and in another hanging locker to starboard, making the 38 a great vessel for a long haul.
What’s really neat, though, are the custom-designed dual heads to port and starboard of the cabin. Both have toilets and sinks, but the one to port adds a standup shower. After all, no matter how close you and your spouse might be, some things are better done in private.
Should you wish to invite guests aboard, the saloon’s dinette converts to a double-size berth, and the galley has all the fixings for entertaining. Most noteworthy here is the roughly ten-foot-long hatch in the saloon’s teak sole that raises hydraulically to reveal the 38’s single 800-hp 3406E Caterpillar diesel, which propels her to a respectable top hop of 31.6 mph.
Because this boat (like all Wilburs) is fully custom, your choices are limited only by your imagination (and wallet).
Base price for the 38 Duffy is $500,250.
